I always doubt that westerners taking years off from their work for an adventure. I am fully aware of the pro side of it after I resigned from a full-time job. I feel lighter and brighter, and become more productive and exciting without the weight of a stressful and overloading job holding me down. Capture a stunning moment, or write about a never before experience is what I wanted to do at all times. Nowadays, I have extra time and a private space to step back, and think what this 16-years career life has taught me, and how I lived through moments in the industrial world with dignity and faith.
I remember thinking how strange it was that after we had acquired science and technology from the industrial countries and successfully produced many branded high-tech appliances with local resources, after years and years of hardship we appeared to have given up the skills and the accepted wisdom afterwards.
When talk about best manufacturing practices I am somewhat skeptical, but wanted to find out for myself if these supposed best practices could do everything that they claimed. What caught me by surprise was the gaudy problem solving method we used in the high-tech industry.

Much more to clouds than meets the eye and that is the reality for the high-tech industry. Take a hard look at the most reserved of the industry’s strategy – cause and effect study, I was in shock realizing how many technical staffs pitch ideas without doing enough research.
Even if, it has nothing to do with the urgency and the pressure, instead of a foolproof long-term solution, we can still expect to be given a fire-fighting short-term answer. The action plan presents by the solution provider is a wishful thinking. The presenter tends to manipulate the spectators’ emotion by offering details of which bear resemblances to their anecdotes in real life.
I have never encountered the phrase “method to one’s madness” with such amount as I have in this industry. People are intrigued by the feeling someone’s life could be improved, and behavior that is not as ridiculous, illogical, and strange as it seems but in the end are done for a “good” reason.
Though it is delivered under such a harsh situation based on a technology platform and sounds crazy, it is still acceptable and started to gain popularity across the industrial fields. For one weird, fabulous reason – the way information being delivered provides clues about the audience’s clandestine life, and it has helped them live a better life later.
During the resource (solution) scarcity time and when there is no answer to the solution, make somebody believe that a technical proposal is an attribute of she, is the best way out. If the proposal produces delightful sensation, so is she. Paradoxically, what intrinsic worth that proposal grant is out of concern.
Also, by setting up a straw man and setting it on fire, and kicking the cinders around the stage, the solution provider can switch the attention from the tangible, core problem to the intangible implication, and, yet gained round of applaud for his “Mumbo Jumbo”.
From generation to generation, from senior to junior, everybody seems to support that approach and believe it can help them to survive from “crisis” and “conflict”, and “jump on the bandwagon” as the bandwagon rides through the high-tech industry and the public services. What frightening us most is that, it has also penetrated the divine places, the food industry and the medical field.

To cut loose and tell what I thought of all this, it does more harm than good. It probably can lead to unhelpful effects. Like the time my colleagues implied my IELTS test as a reused parts shipment, in the end was rejected by Thailand QC due to some trivial cosmetic defects despite the multiple screening and control steps prior to the shipment, had a detrimental effect on me before the test day.
I felt discourage and constantly disturbed by the messages broadcasting across the border. But the colleagues, who responsible for this entire inferior product, had a pretty convincing reason defending their position during the material review board meeting.
By flattening the customers and investors with an easy-on-the-pocket strategy, we thought we could gain competitive advantages and raise eyebrows, but we were wrong. We, in fact, are digging our own grave in a technological innovation if facts, creative work and innovative design buried under these pitches are getting tough to surface and nowhere to be seen.
Who wants to sweat blood and scratch head to create an innovative gadget if there is a much easier alternative on hand we can use to attain the same result (reward) effortlessly? Most of the industrial people aware that, for a scientific work to become manifest means they have to exert enormous effort to do research, but after years and years of beating their head against the wall, they finally got it. Perhaps, after years and years of hardship one should gratify oneself for one moment…..
We can boast about the exceptional past moments during which the economic was at its peak, but now we have to face the challenge of more and more high-tech industries are leaving the country or downsizing their investment. Could it be just the expensive labor issue or government’s inflexible policies? Perhaps we are facing stiff competition from emerging economies like China and India? Or it is because somebody has screwed up the industrial indicators?
If we were to leverage the technology position confronting the industrial countries, we would have to lose the attitude that we have had that glory moment and won the contracts decades ago. The pendulum, now, has swung to the hostile side where we are all about industry’s health check and find solutions for the setback.
Maybe we have to revert to the era when “white is white” and “round is round” perception and handle thing, as it was spelled out explicitly rather than the implicit clouds. We need to stop the notion that offering intangible insights during technological advancement is a flattering way to manage conflict and crisis. Or else, this prolonged, prevalent problem will continue to haunt the industry and restrain creative thinking and innovation.
